"The
Mephisto Expendables
Tourney, TMET"
The time machine, 25-35 years later!
"With the knowledge we have today we know
many things much better"
TMET started April 15th, 2018

Of course, with the flag of The Netherlands (Ed
Schroeder, Frans Morsch) and the German flag (Mephisto
and German programmers).
Assorted colors for different chess computers? Or
sets of pieces become confused!
Sure, Mephisto Polgar in
"pink" and Mephisto Magellan as strongest chess computer in
"black".
A little story
Since
October 2017 I try to collect
a group of interesting older Mephisto chess computers for an endless
tournament.
At this time, I had a lot of contacts to
very friendly
peoples from chess computer community (most are Germans), examples: Werner Eberl,
Andreas Mühlbradt, Eduard Miller,
Peter Haupert, Reinhard Sacher, Gerd
Klappich, Ruud
Martin and much
others. Most important my contact to
Gerd Klappich. Gerd tuned 15 of 20 of my chess computer for my
new idea. I had a lot of fun with him. Andreas and Ruud gave there helps for tuning.
From Andreas is the "Display-VOLT" module idea. Carsten Meyer
do a lot in questions of tuning and gave the community an immense help.
If you need a person for tuning - with excellent
technical understandings and knowledge - please contact me. I will send your
request to Gerd if you like (if he have time for it).
Frank Quisinsky
I have most interest on
Mephisto Modular
boards. The Exclusive / München wooden boards needs to many places. The modular
board technique is perfect if I must have switched defect parts. Even though they
were pioneers 25-35 years ago yet. In this contest it is also interesting to
note the Super Mondial's (Versions: 1a, 1b by Frans Morsch,
v2 and Mega IV by Ed Schröder & the Dallas program 68000 XL by
Richard Lang). I like the Mephisto laptop series also (Versions: Modena,
Milano Pro / Master Chess, Atlanta by Frans Morsch, Milano /
Nigel Short by Ed Schröder and Berlin 68000 / Berlin 68020 by
Richard Lang).
So, I have collected best material to perfect
conditions. 2x Mirage type 1, 5x Modular type 2 & 4x Modular type 4 boards, so each of the modules can be
run under an own board. The type of Modular
board is
important in questions of 5 / 6 volt. For an example: Newer modules need a type 4 board
(Portorose / Lyon / Vancouver / MMVI / Senator / Magellan and
tuned modules often). In additional I collect different Mondials and chess
computer from the Laptop series.
Back to Mephisto Modular:
Mephisto Modular (German WIKI) Type 1 with ~ 6.20 volt, type 2 with
~ 5.80 volt, type 4 with ~ 5.00 volt)
Better as the
older original power adapter HGN 5001 or others
from Mephisto / Saitek are in my humble opinion:
Hint 1: goobay
59031, 3-12V x 600mA = max. 7.2W (example: 9V
x 600mA = 5,4W)
Hint 2: Ansmann APS600, 3-12V x 600mA = max. 7.2W
Hint 3: Leicke NT03091, 9V x 1A
(1000mA) = 9W
Hint 4: I am
using for pieces 1mm felt (Filz in German) and
Olfa Kreisschneider für Kreise von 1-15cm DM
(link to Amazon)
Why I do that? From time to time I have to switch to
another part of computer chess, can be an older part. I am buying and selling chess computers since I
was 11 years old. More as 80 chess computers I had in my possession since 1978: My first
was a Chess Challenger 7. Now I am 51 years old. I am sure I have a lot of fun
to play myself vs. all the older Mephisto chess computer. So, after FEOBOS
I will start the endless tournament. If I have time for it, new games can be
play. Games and tournament table will be public here / on my site, why not?!
Maybe our
FEOBOS opening book
will be in the future available for a newer
chess computer? Sure, that a lot of
people will have many funs with all the work around FEOBOS by
Klaus Wlotzka and myself in combination with newer and stronger
chess computers.
Please Note: Of course, my collection of Mephisto
chess computers isn't complete! I the past I have much technical problems with a
Mephisto Risc 2Mb module set by Ed Schröder. So I have no
interest to buy it again for TMET. The modules by Richard Land
are very expensive. I have Mephisto Portorose 16bit, tuned to Mephisto Vancouver
16bit. This is enough. Mephisto Atlanta is the same as Mephisto Magellan. The
different from Mephisto Berlin 68000 / 68020 to Mephisto Vancouver module are
very small. Mephisto produced a lot more chess computers but I am thinking I
have a strong group for TMET collected.
Again, I have no interest to add older chess computers from Novag,
Fidelity, Saitek, CXG, Excalibur and others.
TMET started with 14 participants at April 15th, 2018.
Ed Schröder, Frans Morsch, Richard Lang, Ulf Rathsman,
Thomas Nitsche,
Elmar Henne ...
made the Mephisto chess computer fans very happy!
I like most the programs by
Ed Schröder!

So Ed Schröder get my personal
computer chess award! 5 chess computers with programs by Ed are included in TMET!
Have a look here:
http://rebel13.nl/dedicated/overview.html
(nice work by Ed himself)
Gerd
Klappich, Andreas Mühlbradt, Carsten Meyer for
his sensational work & Ruud Martin
... the chief persons in tunings at this time ...
get the
Chess Award also!

Mirage Board 1 /
Mirage Board 2 (Type 1)
Mephisto starts to produce modules around
1983 /
1984!
Programmers of Mirage & MM I modules are Thomas Nitsche &
Elmar Henne (Germany) MM I tuned with HG170 opening eprom.

The pieces comes from a Modular board. Looks perfect for me.
Gerd Klappich
produced a VOLT module for myself. For all the different modules
and boards I need it for testing. Around 6.21 volt for type 1!
A feature: You can operate the Rebell 5.0 module with sensors in Mirage board!!
Mirage board works fine with all functions with: Mirage, MM I &
"NON
TUNED" Rebell 5.0 modules!
More information (*.pdf)

One year later in
1985 B&P and
MM IIa
modules are available!
Modular Board 3 (Type 2)
Programmer of
B&P is Ulf Rathsman (Germany) A bit better in tactics as MM IIa and in endgame weaker.

At the moment B&P still in tuning from 3,7 to 7,4MHz.
Around 5.87 volt for type 2! PICs follow later!

Modular Board 4
(Type 4) Participant 01 of 14
Programmer of
MM IIa is Ulf Rathsman (Germany) MM IIa tuned with
HG240 opening eprom and from 3,7 to 7,4MHz With
Polgar my personal favorite
from all of the Mephisto chess computers I have! Very strong after tuning ...
go MM IIa go ... I have many fun with MM IIa since
I have it.

In 1986 Rebell 5.0
module and Super Mondial Ia / Ib are available!
Modular Board 5
(Type 2) Participant 02 of 14
Programmer of Rebell 5.0 is Ed Schröder (The
Netherlands) Rebell 5.0 is
tuned from 5 to 8,8MHz. Tactically often very danger, good for a surprise during
the games.

Programmer of Super Mondial Ia is Frans
Morsch (The Netherlands).
Super Mondial 1a is
tuned from 4 to 8MHz with Super Mondial 1b eprom.
The playing style is unknown for me, can be a newer version of the CXG
Sphinx Dominator program?!

Programmer of Super Mondial Ib is Frans
Morsch (The Netherlands). Programmer of Mega IV from
1988 is Ed
Schröder (The Netherlands).
Super Mondial 1b is
tuned from 4 to 10MHz with Mega IV eprom. Mega IV can be an improved MM IV program!?

In 1987 MM IV
module and Super Mondial II are available!
Modular Board 6
(Type 4)
Programmer of MM IV is Ed Schröder (The
Netherlands) MM IV tuned with HG440
opening eprom and from 5 to 10MHz. v7.1 (two versions are available)
Lesser tactic, playing style is designed more positionally.

Programmer of Super
Mondial II is Ed Schröder (The Netherlands).
Super Mondial II is
tuned from 4 to 8MHz. I think the playing style
is comparable with MM IV.

Most interesting for tuning is Super Mondial 1b & Super Mondial 2. Super
Mondial II was available with and without a "Collage" module (positions for chess training)!
Ordinary, Super Mondial II with College module has for each field coordinates on
the board. I changed here the surface.

In 1989 Roma II and Polgar
modules are available!
Modular Board 7
(Type 2) Participant 03 of 14
Programmer of Roma II is Richard Lang
(England)
Roma II tuned from 10 to 20MHz, running on 68000 Motorola processor.
Positionally playing style, often better as the others currently in endgames.

Modular Board 8
(Type 2) Participant 04 of 14
Programmer of Polgar is Ed Schröder
(The Netherlands)
Polgar tuned from 5 to 10MHz with a nice OLED in yellow color. v1.5 (two
versions are available) A mix from positional and tactically playing style,
better in endgames as the other modules by Ed. Polgar is running on type 2 Modular with 5,76
volt for an example!

With an OLED display in yellow! Maybe with MM V the most
popular Mephisto modules.

Modular Board 9
(Type 2) Participant 05 of 14
In the year
1990 the MM V was available.
Programmer of MM V is Ed Schröder (The Netherlands). MM V tuned with
HG550 opening eprom
and from 5 to 10MHz. v5.1 (two versions are available) Tactical playing
style, maybe the strongest 8bit chess computer together? Or is the strongest
the Nigel Short eprom inside Milano?

In 1991 Vancouver
module and Milano are available!
Modular Board 10
(Type 4) Participant 06 of 14
In
the year 1991 the
Vancouver module set was available. Programmer of Vancouver
is Richard Lang (England). My Mephisto Portorose
68000
from 1989
is
tuned with Vancouver eprom and an OLED display. Balanced playing style
and stronger for endgames.

Around 4.98 volt for type 4! So I don't need the adapter module for a type 4
Modular board.

Participant 07 of 14
In
the year 1991 the Milano was available. Programmer of Milano
is Ed Schröder (The Netherlands). My
first Milano is
tuned from 5 to 10MHz and has a blue display. An improved Polgar program?

Here with a wooden board from Spain and nice pieces
with king size 60mm for analyzes.
In background a DGT-3000 chess clock. I like more the
good and old mechanic chess clocks.

Participant 08 of 14
In
the year 1992 the Modena was available. Programmer of Modena
is Frans Morsch (The Netherlands). Modena is tuned from 4 to
8,4MHz. Same program years before was available in CXG Sphinx Dominator.
Tactical playing style with problems in endgames.
An underestimated chess computer. Unfortunately, with some missed features for
problem solving. No underpromotion for an example! The underpromotion problem
can be found in all the chess computers by Frans Morsch.

The same figures as the original but in wooden color from a Fidelity chess
computer!

Participant 09 of 14 John Stanback
(USA) released in the year 1992
the program Zarkov 2.61 for PC, in the year
1995 the version
Zarkov 3.04. At first I am thinking Zarkov 2.61 is a good idea for
TMET, but it seems Zarkov 2.61 isn't stronger on Intel® Pentium® Processor with
MMX™ Technology 166MHz Notebook as ~ 1800 Elo with 60 moves in 15 minutes.
I have interest to simulate ~ 2100 Elo for a Zarkov
version.
 A more powerful Zarkov needed!
Zarkov 3.04 on Intel® Pentium® Processor with MMX™
Technology 166MHz = ~ 1.000 nodes per second!
Zarkov 3.04 on Intel® Core™ i7 Processor 5930k
4.0GHz with Chess-DOS-VirtualMachine = ~ 22.000 nodes per second!
Chess-DOS-VirtualMachine
(idea by Franz Huber)
Have a look in the following graphic (307803 : 14
seconds = 21.985 nodes per second)!
The Chess-DOS-VirtualMachine on Intel® Core™ i7
Processor 5930k 4.0GHz is ~ 22 times faster as Zarkov 3.04
on Intel® Pentium® Processor with MMX™ Technology 166MHz with MS DOS 6.22. =
Factor 4,5 or ~ 300 Elo stronger without ponder!
I am sure that
Zarkov 3.04
is playing with ~ 2100 Elo with time control "60 moves in 15 minutes" on Intel® Core™ i7
Processor 5930k 4.0GHz with Chess-DOS-VirtualMachine and
without ponder!
Settings: Playing Strength = Master, Playing Style = Active, Think on
opponents time (Permanent Brain) = Off, Selective Search = On, Transposition
Table (Hash) = On

The playing style of programs by John Stanback is absolutely human like.

Participant 10 of 14 (Nigel Short) In
the year 1993 the
Nigel Short version for Milano was available. Programmer of Milano
/ Nigel Short
is Ed Schröder (The Netherlands). My
second Milano is
tuned with Nigel Short eprom, from 5 to 10MHz and has a yellow display. The
Nigel Short program is a good mix between MM V and
Polgar in playing style. The last and maybe the most interesting
8bit program by Ed Schröder!?

With a display in yellow and same figures as the
original but in white from Peri! Pieces can be found in "Travellers Club
Collection" also.
The same white comparable to the Mephisto Modular
figures!!

Participant 11 of 14
In
the year 1996 the Milano
Pro was available. Programmer of Milano Pro
is Frans Morsch (The Netherlands). My Milano Pro is
tuned from 20 to 28,4MHz. The Milano Pro has the same program as Senator
(without RAM for hash). Atlanta (Laptop series) and Magellan module are
the more expensive chess computers (with RAM for Hash). It can be interesting to have both in my
tournament (Milano Pro without RAM and a Magellan with RAM). Please have a look in my further comments to the next participant
Magellan.

Silver figures comes from Mephisto Milano!
Black shiny figures comes from "unknown" ... maybe a
Fidelity chess computer?

Modular Board 11
(Type 4) Participant 12 of 14
And the chess computer community are waiting many years
for new module.
In 1998 Saitek comes with
different new modules (MM VI / Senator
/ Magellan). Programmer of these
modules are Frans Morsch (The Netherlands)
In my opinion is Magellan / Atlanta the most interesting older chess computer together with
Novag Diamond series & Mach III & Mach IV! The Magellan produced from human perception a fantastic aggressive style
of chess.

The Modular board for Mephisto Magellan have a black border,
it's
rarely!

Ruud Martin tuned my Senator with a 512kB memory ... so a Magellan
was born!

Participant 13 of 14
Millennium
released in 2015 Chess Genius and in
2016 Chess Genius
Pro. Programmer is Richard Lang (England). Chess
Genius is running with an ARM Cortex M4 with 48MHz, Chess Genius Pro with
an ARM Cortex with 120MHz. I dislike the display and pieces and changed that. For my tourney I
will used Chess Genius only because Chess Genius Pro is too
strong for TMET. So many years later I await a better quality. But the price
is fully OK and I like it.

Figures comes from Mephisto Modena!

Participant 14 of 14
Frank Quisinsky (of course, I have interest
to play).
I am playing on my wooden boards 1 & 2 vs. all the chess
computers. I have more fun with original Garde Ruhla clocks in comparing to my
DGT3000 chess clock. Here two Ruhla clocks from 1981 and 1987 made in GDR!
On the left site a chess board from Spain with DGT Polgar pieces (king size
95mm). On the right site chess board and pieces from India (king size 90mm).
Chess boards & pieces are from my chess dealer:

Conditions: - max. time for analyses per position =
02:30:00 - not found = + 03:00:00
for summary time calculation
*1 = In 98% of the cases pawns are promoted to queens.
Sometimes though, it would be better to promote to something else other than a
queen, like in the example Pos. 3! *2 = Mill. Chess Genius /
Mill. Chess Genius Pro aren't easy to test. The clock is still running after mate
found. Computer doesn't abort the analyses. Solving time can vary with
1-2 seconds! *3 = No underpromotion!
